Xanadu Next is Falcom’s action RPG take on one of gaming’s oldest franchises, and it plays a lot tighter and more focused than the sprawling series name might suggest. You take on the role of a young man drawn into a cursed dungeon beneath a small European village, chasing a legendary sword rumored to be sealed inside.

The dungeon itself is the whole game, structured as a massive labyrinth built from interconnected floors rather than a series of separate levels. Backtracking is expected here. Doors you couldn’t open on your first pass become accessible once you’ve found the right key or learned the right spell, and the map slowly reveals itself as a real puzzle rather than a straight corridor.

Combat runs on real-time action mixed with a light RPG progression system. Swinging a weapon, dodging enemy attacks, and managing stamina all matter more than menu-based turn selection, but leveling up and equipment upgrades still shape how much damage you can take and deal. It’s a hybrid that sits comfortably between pure action and traditional RPG mechanics.

Magic plays a genuinely important role alongside melee combat. Spells range from offensive blasts to utility effects that open new paths through the dungeon, and managing your limited magic points forces real decisions about when to fight and when to conserve resources for a puzzle solution instead.

The story unfolds gradually through notes, environmental details, and conversations with the handful of NPCs you encounter both inside and outside the dungeon. It’s a quieter, more atmospheric narrative style than a lot of action RPGs attempt, letting the setting itself carry a lot of the mood.

Puzzle design threads through nearly every floor of the dungeon. Switches, hidden passages, and item-based solutions gate progress just as often as combat does, and figuring out a floor’s specific trick often matters more than raw combat skill.

Boss encounters punctuate the dungeon’s major sections, each demanding a different tactical approach based on their attack patterns and elemental weaknesses. These fights reward players who’ve paid attention to their equipment loadout rather than just grinding levels.

For fans of methodical dungeon crawlers with real puzzle-solving woven into the action, Xanadu Next delivers a tightly built experience. It’s a smaller, more contained game than its legacy name suggests, and that focus works entirely in its favor.
