About True Crime: Streets of LA
True Crime: Streets of LA puts you behind the badge of Nick Kang, an ex-gang member turned LAPD detective with a habit of ignoring procedure whenever it gets in his way. This is an open-world cop game built years before the genre got crowded, and it still carries a distinct identity.
Los Angeles here isn’t a generic sandbox. Luxaflex built the map around real LA landmarks and neighborhoods, stretched and rearranged for gameplay but recognizable enough that locals will spot the references. Driving through it feels grounded in a way a lot of fictional open-world cities don’t manage.
The moral choice system is where the game earns its identity. Every arrest, every confrontation, gives you the option to go by the book or go full vigilante. Shoot first, plant evidence, or actually build a clean case, and the game tracks your karma across the whole campaign based on those calls.
Combat mixes gunplay with a genuinely deep martial arts system, letting Nick chain punches, kicks, and grabs together in extended combo strings. It’s rougher than a dedicated fighting game, but it’s more ambitious than most action games bothered attempting at the time.
Driving sections lean into arcade chaos rather than simulation. Chasing a suspect through traffic means clipping cars, running red lights, and occasionally launching off a ramp mid-pursuit, and the game rewards aggressive driving over careful navigation.
Investigation segments break up the action with actual detective work, following leads, interrogating suspects, and piecing together case details before the next big set piece. It’s a slower pace than the shootouts and chases, but it gives Nick’s job real texture beyond just violence.
The story leans hard into LA gang culture and corruption, with Nick’s own gang past constantly complicating his police work. Old contacts, old loyalties, and old enemies all resurface throughout the campaign, keeping the plot personal instead of procedural.
For anyone who remembers open-world cop games before the genre standardized around a handful of formulas, Streets of LA is worth revisiting. Its combo-heavy combat and morality system still feel distinct even now.
