theHunter: Primal drops you on a prehistoric planet called Primal Eden and hands you a gun. Expansive Worlds built it with Avalanche Studios, the team behind Just Cause, as a premium spin-off of the theHunter franchise.

It’s a one-time purchase. The original theHunter runs as a free-to-play subscription service, and Primal skips the microtransactions entirely.

The lore is played for laughs. The Expansive Galaxies Corporation runs the planet, and if you fail, your family gets volunteered as Pioneers.

Five dinosaur species roam the map: Tyrannosaurus Rex, Triceratops, Utahraptor, Velociraptor, and Quetzalcoatlus. The Early Access launch had just three, which were Triceratops, Utahraptor, and T-Rex.

The early builds put 16 players on a 24 km² island. You hunt, but you also get hunted, and the animals plan their own attacks.

Dinosaurs aren’t the only danger. Poisonous plants, starvation, dehydration, and other players can all kill you, and your items drop when you die. In the early builds, wild animals could carry off your gear if you didn’t get back to your body quickly.

You can play solo or in multiplayer, and you can create private sessions. Turn PvP off and the same world becomes a co-op hunt with friends.

A persistent inventory keeps what you collected in one session for the next. The game reached its full release in 2015, and Steam now lists it as unlisted at the publisher’s request.
