Mortal Kombat 11 opens with time travel tearing the timeline apart, and that setup gives NetherRealm an excuse to put younger and older versions of the same fighters on screen together. Young Liu Kang standing next to his older, corrupted self isn’t a gimmick here, it drives the entire story mode.

Custom Variations replaced the fixed loadout system from MK X. You’re not locked into three preset movesets anymore, you pick specialization slots and build a fighter around whatever playstyle you actually want. It opened up a much deeper layer of character customization than the series had before.

Fatal Blows arrive as a new comeback mechanic, cinematic finishing moves available once your health drops low enough. They hit hard and look brutal, but they’re limited to once per match, so timing when to bait one out or hold back becomes a real decision.

The story campaign runs several hours and pulls in nearly the entire roster across a genuinely twisty plot. NetherRealm’s cinematic direction is still some of the best in the fighting game genre, and the campaign holds up as one of the stronger entries even outside the actual fighting.

Krypt mode returns as a fully explorable 3D hub this time, not just a menu screen. Wandering through it hunting for gear, skins, and Fatalities feels closer to a light adventure game bolted onto a fighter, and it’s a genuine time sink on its own.

Gear customization lets you change a character’s appearance and abilities piece by piece, though the system leans on grinding currency to unlock most of it. It’s divisive among longtime fans, but the sheer amount of visual variety it enables is hard to argue with.

Online play includes ranked and casual matches, King of the Hill lobbies, and cross-play support added in later updates. The netcode held up well enough at launch to keep the competitive scene active for years after release.

Fatalities remain as brutal as ever, and the roster spans both classic Mortal Kombat characters and new additions built specifically around the time-travel story. For fans of the series or fighting games in general, MK11 still holds up as one of the genre’s most complete packages.
