Grand Theft Auto V puts you in Los Santos, Rockstar’s sharpest satire of Southern California yet, and hands you three lead characters instead of one. Michael, Franklin, and Trevor each bring a different tone to the same city, and switching between them mid-heist is still one of the best tricks the series has pulled off.

Michael is the retired criminal trying to keep his family together and mostly failing. Franklin is the ambitious repo man looking for a way out of his neighborhood. Trevor is the loose cannon nobody wants to deal with but everyone needs. Rockstar wrote three genuinely different perspectives on the same criminal underworld, and the writing holds up because none of them feel like filler.

Heists are where the character-switching mechanic really pays off. Plan an approach, pick your crew, then jump between characters in real time as the job goes sideways. A rooftop sniper covering a getaway driver while a third character handles the vault feels nothing like a scripted mission, because you’re actually managing three moving parts at once.

Los Santos itself is dense enough to explore for dozens of hours outside the story. Deserts, mountains, a full ocean floor, a fictional Hollywood built out of every LA cliché worth mocking. Side activities range from yoga and tennis to street races and bounty hunting, and most of them are genuinely worth doing rather than filler for a checklist.

The shooting and driving both got real refinement over previous entries. Gunplay finally feels tight instead of stiff, and vehicle handling covers everything from sports cars to jets without any of it feeling like an afterthought. Rockstar clearly spent real time tuning both systems instead of leaning on the open world to carry the game.

GTA Online sits alongside the story campaign as basically its own game at this point. Heists, businesses, races, and constant content updates have kept players coming back for years after launch, well past what most open-world games manage.

The soundtrack deserves a mention too. Radio stations spanning rock, hip-hop, country, and electronic music, all with in-character DJs and ads that build out the satire as much as the missions do. It’s background noise that actually adds to the world instead of just filling silence.

Years after release, GTA V still holds up as one of the most complete open-world packages on PC. Three well-written leads, a genuinely funny script, and a city built with more detail than it had any obligation to include.
