About Ace Combat Assault Horizon
Ace Combat Assault Horizon pulled the series away from its fictional wars and into something closer to modern conflict, and it’s a shift that still splits fans of the franchise. Real-world locations, real aircraft, and a story built around a private military contractor spinning out of control.
The headline addition is Close Range Assault, a dogfighting mode that pulls the camera in tight and lets you chase an enemy jet through canyons and city streets at speeds that make the older top-down dogfights look tame. It’s cinematic in a way earlier Ace Combat games never tried to be.
You’re not locked to jets either. Helicopters, gunships, and bombers all get missions built around what makes them different. A gunship run tearing through ground targets plays nothing like an air superiority dogfight in an F-22, and the game leans into that variety instead of treating every vehicle the same.
The campaign jumps between multiple pilots and perspectives, which was a departure for the series. It’s trying to tell a bigger, messier story about a war contractor going rogue, and while the narrative doesn’t always land, the mission variety it enables keeps things from feeling repetitive.
Visually, this was one of the best-looking flight combat games on PC when it landed. Explosions, weather, and city destruction all sell the chaos of modern combat, and the sense of speed during a low-altitude canyon run is still genuinely impressive.
Multiplayer includes both traditional dogfight modes and a version of Close Range Assault built for competitive play, which changes the pacing considerably compared to the campaign’s more scripted set pieces. Going up against another player who knows how to use the camera lock is a different kind of pressure entirely.
Not every change worked. Some longtime fans felt the cinematic camera took away the precision aiming the series was built on, and the more grounded, real-world tone traded away some of the older games’ pulpy charm. It’s a fair complaint, and it’s part of why this entry gets debated more than most.
Even with that divide, Assault Horizon is worth playing for anyone who wants arcade flight combat with real weight behind the explosions. It’s the boldest swing the series took, for better and worse.
