About DreadOut
DreadOut is a third-person supernatural horror game from the Indonesian indie studio Digital Happiness, and it arrived on Steam in May 2014. You play Linda, a high school student trapped in an old abandoned town. Her fate depends on how well she fights and how well she thinks.
The story starts with a group of students on a trip. They leave the trail and end up in a dark, abandoned town where mysterious forces roam. Nothing about the place makes sense, and it doesn’t want visitors.
Linda is an ordinary student, and that makes her easy to root for. She has no training for any of this, and the game keeps reminding you through the tools she carries. You feel vulnerable from the first scene.
Linda’s smartphone is her main tool. She uses it like a camera to deal with the ghosts and to solve the puzzles that block her way. Gadgets like a digital camera and a video camera also help.
Taking a photo of a ghost is how you fight back. You aim, frame the shot, and fire the flash at the right moment. Timing matters, because ghosts don’t wait for you to line up a perfect picture.
The ghosts draw on Asian folklore. Many of them will be new to players who grew up on Western horror, and their designs are odd in a way that sticks with you. Each encounter feels like meeting something you’ve never seen before.
Puzzles fill the gaps between scares. You explore the abandoned town, search for clues, and work out what each locked door or strange object needs. Solving them pushes the story forward and keeps the tension from letting up.
The setting does a lot of the work. An old abandoned town gives the game plenty of dark corners, narrow paths, and quiet spots where something might be waiting. You never feel fully safe, even when nothing is chasing you.
Atmosphere drives the scares. A distant sound, a figure at the edge of the screen, or an empty room that feels wrong can unsettle you long before a ghost appears.
The game is split into acts. The Steam version includes Act 1 and Act 2 of Linda’s journey, along with Act 0, which was released earlier as a separate demo. Together they make up the main game.
DreadOut was the debut project of Digital Happiness, a small indie studio based in Indonesia. A new team with a strong idea can stand out in a crowded genre, and this game proves it.
Steam users rate the game Mostly Positive, with 77% of 4,139 reviews favorable. IGN included it in a list of 13 horror games to play in 2014. Reviews are mixed on the pacing, so expect a few rough spots along the way.
Some players say the combat could use more variety, because repeating the camera mechanic can feel samey over a long session. If you like puzzle-driven horror, that matters less.
DreadOut: Keepers of the Dark is a standalone chapter set in the same universe. It came out in March 2016 and adds 2 new levels that weren’t in the original game. You face more than 13 ghosts designed by the game’s backers.
A DreadOut Remastered Collection also exists and bundles both games. It adds an updated interface and a new brightness system, and it’s verified for Steam Deck. Check the store page to see which edition fits you.
Steam also sells bundles. The DreadOut Collection includes the base game, the Soundtrack and Manga DLC, and Keepers of the Dark. Another bundle pairs DreadOut with In Sound Mind, another horror game.
