About Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion
Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion is a remaster of the 2007 PSP action RPG Crisis Core, and it launched on December 13, 2022. Square Enix rebuilt the game with new graphics, a rearranged soundtrack, fully voiced dialogue, and an updated combat system. It’s the prequel that fills in the story before Final Fantasy VII.
The story begins seven years before Final Fantasy VII. You play Zack Fair, a young operative in Shinra’s elite SOLDIER program. As his missions unfold, he finds the dark secrets behind Shinra’s experiments and the monsters they create.
Zack carries the whole game. He’s cheerful, loyal, and a bit reckless, and his optimism makes the darker turns of the story hit harder. Fans of Final Fantasy VII will recognize how much his choices shape what comes later.
Familiar faces show up along the way. Sephiroth is Zack’s hero, Aerith becomes an important part of his life, and Cloud Strife appears in a smaller role. The cast also includes the SOLDIER members Angeal and Genesis, who drive much of the plot.
Relationships give the story its heart. Zack’s friendships and his bond with Aerith are written with warmth, and they give the darker plot real emotional weight. The game spends time on small moments, which makes the big ones land.
Combat runs in real time. Zack attacks, guards, and dodges while you trigger Materia and items from a menu. The Reunion update modernizes the system compared to the PSP original.
Materia drives your build. You equip Materia to cast spells, boost stats, and add special effects. Choosing the right setup for each fight rewards players who like to experiment.
Materia Fusion lets you combine Materia to create new and stronger versions. It adds a crafting layer on top of the combat, and the results can change how a fight plays out. Players who enjoy tinkering will find plenty to try.
The Digital Mind Wave, or DMW, is the game’s signature system. A set of reels spins during battle, and the results can trigger level-ups, Limit Breaks, and Summons. You can’t control it directly, so every fight carries an element of surprise.
Limit Breaks are some of the flashiest moves in the game. When the DMW lines up, Zack unleashes a powerful attack or a Summon that can turn a hard fight around. Waiting for that moment is part of the thrill.
Zack’s gear and abilities grow as the story moves forward. You equip new gear, collect Materia, and level up through the DMW, so your build keeps changing across the campaign. That steady growth keeps each mission feeling fresh.
Missions come in two forms. Story missions move the main plot forward, and optional side missions let you earn rewards and explore Zack’s world. The side missions are short, so they fit easily into a quick play session.
The visuals got a complete HD overhaul for modern screens. On the recommended specs, the game targets 60 FPS at 1080p. It looks sharp next to the PSP original.
The soundtrack was newly arranged for this release. Familiar themes return with fresh arrangements, and the music supports the story’s emotional moments.
Dialogue is fully voiced in English and Japanese. You can choose the language you prefer, and the voice work adds weight to the story’s key scenes. Cutscenes feel more personal when the characters speak every line.
Square Enix’s Yoshinori Kitase, the executive producer, called it more than a remaster. The team set out to bring the cult classic to a new generation and to every platform at once. It launched on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch on the same day.
The PC version asks for modest hardware. The minimum specs target 30 FPS at 720p, and the game needs 30 GB of storage and DirectX 12. A 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 system is required.
