Defending leans on the same jockey-and-contain system from before, but positioning matters more here. The new animations mean a mistimed slide tackle actually costs you, instead of resetting your defender instantly.

Online modes carry over Konami ID support, with ranked matches and co-op play against other managers. The servers ran a proper competitive ladder at launch, which mattered if you wanted your Master League squad tested against real opponents.

If PES 2012 was the game that proved Konami could compete, 2014 is the one that showed how far the engine could actually go. It’s rougher around the edges in places, but the football underneath is the best the series had played to that point.
